My BDE Faves

So if you’ve been on the internet in the past week you may have seen the term Big Dick Energy (BDE) floating around and like me you may have been wondering what the hell it means. According to Vox BDE is:

It’s the self-confidence to know that a colossal endowment isn’t a measurement of one’s value. BDE might stem from having a literal BD, but it’s not dependent upon any sort of genitalia. And in fact, perhaps the epitome of BDE is the complete security of not needing other people’s benchmarks — wealth, intelligence, beauty, or a BD — to know one’s own worth.

Any suspicion of tryhard vibes kills BDE, as does the kind of cockiness that speaks of insecurity: the true BDE-haver is respectful to those around them, but with swagger. Someone with BDE will never text an unsolicited dick pic, because it would simply never occur to them.

I take that to mean someone who is secure in themselves who isn’t actively trying to get you to like them. For instance I would say Jennifer Lawrence has absolutely no trace of BDE but someone like Saoirse Ronan totally does, it’s all in the vibe you get from someone.

And after reading through all the lists of people perceived to have this fantastic BDE I decided to create my own list of my faves that I think are oozing in it.

  1. Gina Rodriguez

I LOVE Gina! She’s confident and fun and most of all she always appears to be herself.

2. Rami Malek

I feel like Rami has a similar vibe to another BDE fav Adam Driver, they both have an appeal that other’s wont get until they do. I have seen Rami in a million things, then one day I was watching The Master and I was just like who is that guy.

3. Cate Blanchette

Cate is legit on everyone’s list and for good reason, she epitomizes BDE. She is funny and talented in a way most actress’s wish they could be and she does it everything without the slightest hint of arrogance. You can’t help but look at her and have a slight admiration for her swag.

4. Daniel Kaluuya

It wasn’t until the Black Panther tour that I saw more of Daniel, but after two seconds I adored him. I wish there were a million interviews with him because he is delightful, but honestly I don’t see that happening because I don’t think Daniel actually gives a f about doing them.

5. Gal Gadot

A lot of people put Wonder Woman and the women around her of their list, but I’m going to add Gal because she is pure light and joy. There is a realness about her where you feel like she isn’t pasting on a smile and forcing some funny stories so you’ll like her and watch her movie.

6. Keanu Reeves

Think about this Keanu got big around the same time as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Tom Cruise, has had equal (if not more in some cases) success, and did it all without having one ounce of the smarm that oozes from those guys. He has zero obsession with his image or recognition and has a reputation for being one of the nicest, most humble people in Hollywood.

7. Michael B. Jordan

A few years ago I might have not put Mike on this list, but the Michael of today is definitely oozing with BDE.

8. Angelina Jolie

I have always been in awe of how little of a shit Angie gives about what you think of her. As someone who has made headlines all of her career she is surprisingly not all that image conscious and it’s a nice break to see a woman living her life unbothered by the pressure to become every woman’s imaginary BFF.

9. Rudi Mancuso

BDE and YouTuber don’t really go together as YouTube is the space where arrogance and tryhard thrive, but the one exception is Rudy Mancuso.  I recently discovered his videos and after spending hours cracking up at his catalog of hilarious skits I realized something was missing. Later I figured out I was able to enjoy his videos straight through because he wasnt popping up at the end of every one begging me to like and subscribe and that was refreshing.

10. Danai Gurira

She’s just so damn cool.

11. Idris Elba

As someone who is on pretty much every BDE list, do I really need any explanation for this one?

12. Cree Summer

Whether you’re a fan of A Different World or damn near every cartoon on the planet then you probably know Cree’s work, but you might not know her face. I happened to watch a video of her shortly before reading about BDE and I realized she perfectly encapsulates it.

And there is my list. Who would you put on yours? Do you have BDE? I think I have some BDE, but I’m not quite there.

Let’s discuss.
