Current Obsessions: Minimal Edition

It’s been so long since I’ve done one of these and unfortunately I am coming back with my flimsiest obsession post yet. I only have two things for you…. I know right… what the hell is wrong with me? Lets get to it shall we!

1. Come and Get It

OMG! I am in love with this song! I have loved it ever since the first time I heard it. I think the Bollywood beat and catchy hook mixed with Selena’s voice are absolute perfection. And sure it’s not deep, but you must admit it’s a pretty damn awesome pop song.

Oh and the video (which I waited to come out before I wrote this) is so simple and great, plus some of those dresses are amazing.  I just love it!

2. Camera 360

IMG_3227

This is an app that I found completely by accident whist looking for another app and I have to say it is quite possibly one of the coolest photo editing apps out there. It has some really great high quality effects that completely take your phone pics to a whole new level. As a matter of fact if you look around the old blog here you will see some of the apps handiwork (hint: check the pages at the top) and the best part is that the pics look just as great on a big screen as they do on your phone.

My favorite effects right now are cartoon (used above and in page examples) and magic color…

Which admittedly there are many apps that do the color pop effect, but I have tried several and I personally think this one does it best. It takes your everyday mundane pics and makes them into art. Also the magic skin effect is pretty darn awesome too.

Oh wait, I have a third!!!!!

3. Elementary

johnny-lee-miller-lucy-liu-elementary-gallery-2-325How could I forget this? I have been loving this show since it premiered and watch all of the episodes twice.

Johnny is surprisingly loveable as Sherlock and does an amazing job differentiating himself from Cumberbatch’s take on the character. Lucy is the perfect partner and together they have a chemistry that is incredibly fun to watch. I’m not going to get into it too much because later this month I will be writing a post comparing Sherlock to Elementary, but just know even if you are purely a Sherlock fan you should totally give Elementary a try. You’ll like it, I promise!

And that my friends is my not so flimsy current obsessions post.

Current Obsessions: Random Edition

Yeah I’ve done a lot of these and I’m running out of cute edition names, so sue me! Anyway here are my obsessions of the moment….

1. We Are Never Ever Ever Ever Getting Back Together

Oh my god! I tried so damn hard to ignore this song, but I can’t help it I love it so much. It sticks in your head and stays there until you can’t stop singing it.

Sidenote: Can we all stop acting like Taylor understands our pain? Cause you’re probably singing this song about some jackass that sold you shoes at DSW and Taylor is singing it about this mofo…

Yeah if Jake called me wanting to hook up the only way I’m saying We Are Never Getting Back Together is if I’m humming the song as I’m getting out of Jake’s bed the next morning. Just sayin…

2. Frank Ocean

Remember that post when I said I was kinda over Kanye (if not scroll down), well Frank is the man currently filling the hole Kanye left…. hmmm that didn’t sound quite right like maybe it should have been followed by that’s what she said. I digress, I love Frank Ocean and I dare you to hear this,

and not be immediately obsessed with it. Go on listen and tell me you don’t love it. Never mind just tell me if you love it because it you say otherwise I will lose all respect for you.

Also can we just talk about how super cute Frank is? Love that guy!

3. Sherlock

We all know I have a bad habit of being late to the party on these things, so it should come as no shock that I am just discovering Sherlock.  I should point out though that I have known about it for quite some time, but I just never got around to watching it (did the same thing with Game of Thrones) and I actually didn’t think I would like it all that much. Wrong! So wrong! I ended up checking the show out after some gossip posts about Benedict Cumberbatch which sparked my curiousity because let’s face it if you are not in the know hearing people rave about old Cumberbitch kinda leaves you scratching your head.

So after weeks of mulling it over I finally decided to buy an episode on ITunes (because I couldn’t find it abywhere for free) and let me tell you paying that $4.99 hurt my heart and pocket. I wanted to like the show enough to not have wasted my money, but not enough to feel compelled to spend another $30 or so bucks to see the other 5 episodes.  Ten minutes into episode one I knew I was fucked.

Soooo good! It’s like CSI, Criminal Minds, and House had an awesome British baby.  And of course it led to me spending the next 2 days searching for Sherlock for free online (cause that shits expensive yo) and I ended up finding all the episodes here.

Cut to me spending all day watching Cumberbatch being awesome.

Also now I get Cumberbatch!

And that is all people, just three because I am too damn lazy to continue on.

Dammit Girls! You Win…

Yeah you smile you smug bitches….

Okay I am just going to get right into this and admit

I LOVE GIRLS!

The television show not girls in general, but I digress from the first moment I laid eyes on episode 1 of this show I knew I adored it, and was genuinely excited about this series… then the whole race issue came up. I was so excited that there was someone so much like me on-screen that not seeing any people of color was a minor blip on my radar.  It wasn’t until I looked again and started reading articles that I began getting more annoyed by this. I felt like I connected with Lena on some level because we shared similar experiences and when I realized that she didn’t even think of the fact that someone who looked like me could be so similar was kind of hurtful.  It was like being reminded yet again that we will always be thought of as the other.  So being the good black person I am I too joined in on the protesting of Girls even going as far as hoping it would do poorly.

I held out for a while, like five weeks, then I read this article (which I cannot find, sorry y’all  found it!) by Awkward Black Girl writer/producer/actress Tracy Oliver and found myself shaking my head to a number of her points.  I particularly agree with the point that the problem with lack of diversity has less to do with Lena and Girls and more to do with the Hollywood system and it was at that moment it hit me… I have no reason to be pissed at Lena. Am I still a little disappointed she forgot the minorities? Yes, but I also realize that when you write something from your perspective it can at times be limiting. Even as a black girl I realize that my perspective could exclude a lot of my fellow minorities thanks to education, location, and class differences. Does that mean I don’t acknowledge them or know they exist? No, it just means that in my limited perspective I cannot write something honest about someone else’s experience.

But we also have to acknowledge that despite the fact that characters have some minor aesthetic differences from us (race, sex, age, etc.) we can still have shared experiences.  In my mid-twenties I completely connected with the book It’s Kind of a Funny Story despite being neither a teenager nor a boy.  And in that same way I can connect with Hannah’s experience, the girls on the show don’t have to be black for me to understand exactly where they are coming from. As a matter of fact on paper I most likely have more in common with Hannah than with any black character on television or in movies.  Do I wish representations of black girls like this…

Or this…

were on television? Yes, but I also realize that Lena’s Girls is a step in the right direction. For once we don’t have to watch a show about some skinny blond chick in a $600 Marc Jacobs dress (love ya Marc!) complaining about being broke and how she can’t get a date. Girls is about as real as television is going to let us get for now and I’ll take it because I realize change can’t be over night.

Current Obsessions: Girly Edition

It’s going to be a short one, but lets kick this shit in gear shall we….

1. Kimbra

I literally just discovered this girl, but I am already a fan. Not only are her music, clothing, and hair fantastic  she also looks exactly like the love child of Andy and Duckie from Pretty in Pink… So pretty much how can you not like her?

Enjoy some tunes….

2. Somebody That I Used to Know

And speaking of Kimbra, I am loving this song she did with Gotye.

Oh and please don’t get me started on the fantasticness of Kimbra’s hair…

3. Big Bang Theory

Am I late to the party? You bet I am, but I am so glad I finally made it because I love love love the Big Bang Theory. I also particularly love Penny’s laid back girly style.

Plus let’s be honest those Big Bang boys are kinda hot, because nerds will always be hot and awesome.

4. Mini Book Charms

I have to make these! I’m putting two vids because one is really good at showing you how to make them, but the other has charms the other doesn’t.

I also want to do this for Hunger Games.

5. Bunny Tracks

This is the best ice cream ever and it’s got the cutest name. Bonus there are actual chocolate bunnies inside it.

And that’s all folks, hope you enjoyed this edition of current obsessions.

Current Obsessions: Diva Edition

Let’s jump right in shall we:

1. Jennifer Lawerence

The awesome chick behind The Hunger Game’s Katniss Everdeen…. Not much to say about this girl cause she is just too cool for school.

2. Green Light

Not only is the song fantastic, the video is amazing.

3. Ellie Goulding

I may be late to the Ellie G. train, but I am officially on it for the long haul. Especially cause this is stuck in my head permanently…

4. Born to Die

It’s just an incredibly solid album and I love it… highlights include Lolita and This Is What Makes Us Girls.

5. Bad Girls

How can you not like this song?

6. Dulcie O’Neil

This book series is kinda like True Blood had a baby with Buffy… Pretty good!

7. Birthday Cake (remix)

Yeah it sounds like something a skanky stripper would listen to, but I think that’s what I like about it…

8. 212

Saw her name one day and googled it, found this and loved it.

And that is it, well one more thing…

How cool does Naomi look in this pic?

Current Obsessions: Indie Edition

Hey There!

It’s time for another current obsessions list and this edition focuses on my less mainstream loves of the moment. So let’s get started shall we….

1. Camp- Childish Gambino

If you watch community you already know who Donald Glover is and if you have ever seen his comedy act you already know he is one funny mofo, but did you know he raps? Well apparently a shiz load of people knew that long before me, so I am a little late to the party. I actually heard his album camp just a few days ago and I am already beyond obsessed with it.  Which is kind of a rare occurrence for me because I generally am the type of person that likes one or two songs (mostly the popular ones) from an artist and then I’m done.  Only about once every few years do I come across a full album that I not only love, but love so much I have to tell everyone I know about it.

Camp is one of those rare albums.  It is reminiscent of Kanye’s first album The College Dropout (which was and is to this day one of my faves) mixed with Lil Wayne and some Drake thrown in for good measure.  Or as I like to consider nerd rap at its finest.  Plus lets be honest Donald is pretty darn hot.

2. Made of Bricks- Kate Nash

Kate Nash is reminiscent of one of my favorite singers Lily Allen and also has a very similar style to Lily, which by that I mean they both favor lyrics with bite sung over peppy melodies.  A mixture which I happen to adore. And yet again I am late to the party, but I am never really around “music” people, so I have to find new stuff on my own.

3. Hotel Song- Regina Spektor

Last music entry, not exactly a new song but rather one that is currently being played over and over on my I-Phone.

4. Michael Fassbender

Images via Socialite Life

Ummm he rocks ginger hotness like no one else, he takes his clothes off OFTEN, he’s talented, and goodness gracious is he sexy. The man is just…………. DAMN! Losing track of thought , I’m done, go stare at Michael.

5. Awkward Black Girl

It’s a web series on YouTube starring Issa Rae and it is maybe the best find ever. At first you might be a little iffy on it, but I promise you that by the end of the first episode you will be completely invested in the characters and ready to click on episode 2. Plus this web series is the reason I found my new favorite album ever (Camp people! Have we forgotten obsession number 1 already?). So enjoy episode 1 on me….

And that is all people my Indie current obsessions.  Hope you liked them and hope there is something in there you can be obsessed with.

Later loves ;0)
